I got this game because I'm a huge fan of 3rd person shooters with 1st person aiming...like the Star Wars Battlefront games and the Ghost in the Shell game. (3rd person shooter with 1st person aiming means you control the movement of your character with the left analog stick while controlling the aiming reticule of your gun with the right analog stick.)
Well anyway, here's my review.
Graphics-top notch. The cinematic sequences of the story are on Final Fantasy levels of quality. The in-game graphics are very good, but not on FF12 levels, but...still very good. Final Fantasy good. Art style of character creation is also FF appearance based.
Music-100% Final Fantasy music. The same composers of FF worked on this one game too. In other words, the music is great AND familiar if you have played Final Fantasy games in the past.
Gameplay-almost great. The only major problem I have is that the character you control(Vince Valentine) has a terrible evade move. He can't duck n roll, dodge roll, or roll period. He can only roll AFTER getting a knock back hit...which is useless. Vince can shoot, jump, jump n shoot, punch n kick, jumping kicks, and transform. He also has elemental magic attacks he can launch through his weapon/firearm.
One good thing about his weapon is that you can custom create it. Three weapons-a hand gun, a machine gun, and rifle, can be broken up and separated into parts, and switched into each other and combined into different ways. So, for example, you can put the long neck of your rifle onto your machine gun, and this increases the bullets striking power, but lowers the speed of the machine gun's bullet output per second.
The action is thorough, intense, and evenly distributed throughout the game.
The only other negative is the unbalance in regards to the game's bosses. Some bosses are reasonable challenges, while other bosses are godlike in speed and agility, and are completely frustrating for a slow and non-agile character like Vincent. Prepare to spike your controller at various boss fights.
All in all its a good game.
