This game will have you playing for a long time, even without sidequests. Just blindly going through with the story can take a good 60 hours and will sidequests, you shouldn't be surprised to find that your game timer has reached triple digit hours! However, it is worth every second, because you will enjoy it.
The normal battle with monsters are usually quick, ranging from 5 seconds to 30. Boss battles are generally longer, since they are like an HP tank. Depending on difficulty, battles could last as long as 30 minutes!
After you've played through the game once, there is a high desire to replay it again. Further playthroughs will grant you new Mystic Artes, a chance to do missed sidequests or obtain missed items to complete the Collector's Book. You can even visit the Grade Shop to buy stuff to make your next playthrough easier. Good upgrades include doubling experience earned, doubling grade earned, and allowing you to carry up to 20 of one item. Even those people who did not really enjoy this game would want to play it a second time since the game offers so much more. In fact, one would even play this game three times or even more!
I would recommend that you definitely buy this game as soon as possible. This is the PS2 RPG that you just can't miss because it combines all the elements of a good game in a smooth and exciting way. I've heard that this game is no longer in production, so it would be wise to head over to the nearest game store to secure a copy. No wait, I take that back. Buy TWO copies of it, just in case. Yes, this game is that spectacular. Your friends would probably want to try out Tales of the Abyss for themselves, and you wouldn't want to part with your copy. In conclusion, this game is pretty much perfect, so much so that it is worthy of TWO, not just one, purchase.

The main points of the game and also the arguments which would consider it a worthy buy:
Great anime graphics with eye catching skill effects and beutiful zones/terrain,
Great voice cast,
Real time fighting in 3d enviroment this time with a very great freedom of movement,
Many side quests and additional costumes,
Ability to adjust the games difficulty level to your skill,
The FOK system which includes some very interesting combinations,
A great character cast in which everyone is an individual himself,
Thrilling and yet touching story line,
Maany, maany hours of gamplay.
Many skills, artes and weapons makes your walkthrough/fighting experiance everytime unique,
And for last but not the least as for all non portable tales of games u can play with up to 3 friends controlling other characters!!
This game is a must buy! And with that price u there is not time to hesitate!

Like my headline already states...it has the best real time combat battle system of any role playing game for the ps2.
The combat system, I can only describe, is as close to combining a fighting game...with a role playing game.
The combat is that good! Never ever boring or tedious or simple.
The combat and gameplay mechanics are very deep, complex, and far reaching like in many good fighting games.
Try to imagine the characters and gameplay from the street fighter or samurai spirits games...but in a full 3D role playing game with a great story, and you can get a sense of how good the gameplay is.
When a character from your party commits a special or ultimate attack while standing in a field of fonon...the camera quickly zooms in on that character, to a very close position that is dramatic and cinematic, to show off a spectacular view of that special attack. And since there is no cutting of the battle scene...there is no departure of all of the action taking place on the battlefield.
Simply incredible action. A action packed RPG.
Great story that is involving.
Great graphics.
Great characters in your party, with great monsters and villians and bosses to battle.
Final boss battle is simply epic!
Great in battle dialogue between heroes and villians that you hear while battling.
Good music.
Magnificent gameplay.
Kingdom Hearts, Star Ocean, and Final Fantasy XII are more well known and famous action rpgs...but trust me, this Tales Of game is way, way better than those other games.
